Calcium: what it means

Also known as: Ca, serum calcium

Blood calcium supports bones, nerves, and muscles and is tightly controlled by hormones and vitamin D.

What it measures

Calcium in the blood is only a small fraction of the body's total (most is in bone), but it's tightly regulated because nerves and muscles depend on it. Levels are controlled by parathyroid hormone and vitamin D, so an abnormal calcium often prompts a look at those.

Typical range

Often roughly 8.5–10.2 mg/dL; results are sometimes adjusted for albumin, since much of the calcium is protein-bound.

Reference ranges differ between labs and are printed on your own report — always read your result against that range, not a general one.

What a high result can mean

  • Overactive parathyroid glands
  • Some cancers
  • Excess vitamin D or certain medications

A high value is a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis — many causes are benign or temporary.

What a low result can mean

  • Low vitamin D or underactive parathyroid
  • Kidney disease
  • Low albumin (lowers total but not active calcium)

Why the trend matters

A mildly abnormal calcium is often followed over time and paired with parathyroid hormone and vitamin D to find the cause.

When to talk to your doctor

A persistently high or low calcium is worth discussing with your doctor.
