Bilirubin: what it means

Also known as: total bilirubin

Bilirubin is a breakdown product of red blood cells processed by the liver; high levels can cause the yellowing of jaundice.

What it measures

Bilirubin is produced when old red blood cells break down. The liver processes it for removal, so elevated bilirubin can reflect either faster red-cell breakdown or a liver/bile-duct that isn't clearing it well. Above a certain level it causes visible jaundice.

Typical range

Total bilirubin is often roughly 0.1–1.2 mg/dL.

Reference ranges differ between labs and are printed on your own report — always read your result against that range, not a general one.

What a high result can mean

  • Gilbert syndrome — a common, harmless inherited variant
  • Liver conditions or bile-duct blockage
  • Faster red-blood-cell breakdown (hemolysis)

A high value is a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis — many causes are benign or temporary.

Why the trend matters

A mildly high bilirubin that's stable over years often reflects a benign variant like Gilbert syndrome; a rising trend is more likely to warrant attention.

When to talk to your doctor

Discuss an elevated bilirubin with your doctor, especially with jaundice, dark urine, or abnormal liver enzymes.
